Communication

Diary Project

At the beginning of this semester, I had to write in a journal at least two to three communication problems that occur on a weekly basis. Weeks had passed since I wrote my first incident in my journal and now it is time to review my journal entries to see the recurring pattern. I have noticed that there are three recurring patterns on my communication problems. They are noise, involvement with tasks, and intrapersonal communication. I hope after writing this paper and recognizing my communication problems, I will be a better communicator in the future.

My first communication problem I had was on March 14th. I had told my boss that I couldn’t work the last weekend of March because I’m going to have my birthday party at my house. Her reply was, “I won’t put you down on the schedule for that weekend.” That’s what I heard. When I looked at my schedule, I saw that she had put me down to work for that weekend. I asked her why she scheduled me to work the last weekend of March, when I had already asked for the time off. My boss said, “I did not say that I will not put you on the schedule, I said, I will try to not put you down on the last weekend of March.” With my excitement about the birthday party and loud background noise I misheard what my boss had said.

Another listening problem I had occurred on March 25th. My husband told me that he is going to Miami for an interview in two weeks. He told me the date and the time he will be leaving. With the television on, I could not hear him clearly. I heard he will be going to Miami in two days. When I asked him to repeat what he was saying, he got mad at me and told me to pay more attention when...
