Introduction
In today’s world of innovative businesses the consumer has the power and ability to instantly purchase almost any item from cars to even houses over the internet. Companies today must build highly integrated supply chains, which can quickly support new market opportunities and be synchronized and streamlined to maximize efficiency and effectiveness. This paper will describe the elements of the supply chain and outline the supply chain of the Savannah River National Laboratory. In addition, the need for supply chain management in the Savannah River National Laboratory will be addressed.
Elements of the Supply Chain
Supply chain management (SCM) is the oversight of materials, information and finances as they move in a process from supplier to manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Supply chain management involves coordinating and integrating these flows both within and among companies. (SearchCIO.com, 2008)
A supply chain consists of all parties involved, directly or indirectly, in fulfilling a customer request. (Chopra and Meindl, 2007, p. 3) Managing this supply chain ensures the business gets the right goods and services to the places they are needed in the correct quantity and at the agreed upon price and time. Efficiently managing this process involves overseeing relationships with suppliers and customers, controlling inventory, forecasting demand and getting constant feedback on what is happening at every link in the chain. The supply chain involves several elements: location of facilities, production, inventory and transportation.
