First of all, what is a compare and contrast essay? A comparison-contrast essay is a type of informative or expository essay that represents a common arrangement of ideas (Spears & Spears, 2008, p.423). They went on stating that the comparison and contrast method involves putting two subjects side by side to examine their similarities and differences. Reading these two sentences pretty much explains compare and contrast so now let me try and find what kind of information is needed for an effective compare and contrast essay and what to research on to make sure this can help in anyway.
Comparing and contrasting essay as it mentioned earlier, one has to have two subject matters to compare and contrast. Writing a compare and contrast essay, a writer must make sure that the reader does not get confuse as he or she shuttles from one subject or subtopic to the other (Spears & Spears, 2008, p.423). In order to have a well organized effective comparison and contrasting essay, there are two organizational methods to use; the subject-by-subject method and the point-by-point method.
The subject-by-subject method deals with aspects of the first subject fully, point-by-point and then on to the second subject, point-by-point (Spears & Spears, 2008, p.423). It might be difficult to use this organizational method when the subject has more than four subtopics to compare and contrast. Reason being, the reader might get lost along the way on the comparison and contrasting between the first subject and the second one. It will be appropriate to use this method if the subject is easy and has few subtopics to go over. The point-by-point method deals with discussion of each subtopic related to both subjects side by side, either in a single paragraph or in two or more paragraphs to form a section (Spears & Spears, 2008, p.423).
