Arranged Marriages and Love Marriages
Love today is very different compared to love centuries ago. While lifelong marriage will remain the ideal of most Americans, the facts are that cohabitation, divorce, and remarriage have become so common as to approach a standard pattern (Gottman 349). Many countries at one time had arranged marriages and perceived love marriages as morally wrong. Currently love marriages normally happen in countries like the U.S., Western Europe, South America, and Australia. Arranged marriages happen in some parts of Africa, most of Asia and a good portion of Eastern Europe. In Asian cultures marriages have traditionally been arranged for young people. In our culture young people are free to choose their own spouses. With our soaring divorce rate it may be a good idea for us to follow the Asian custom of being arranged to our spouses.
Love marriages are regarded as very sweet and romantic. Many people imagine themselves being in love with their partners and then getting married. The idea of being in love with someone is great because you know that person and are aware that he/she are not with you because of physical attraction or wealth. When two people are in love it is because they are comfortable with one another and they have a certain understanding of what is expected of them (Fowers 114). In love marriages both partners seem to complete each other's thoughts without actually speaking them aloud. They forget about the real world and create their own world where only the both of them exist. These are just some of the many wonderful facets of love marriages.
The problem is that too many people seem to fall in love quickly and then get married, these sudden moves to marriage leads to a divorce (Tischler 52).
