Concentration Barriers
Advancements in technology has enabled us to be on touch on many levels; with cell phones, people can be in touch virtually anywhere in the world. Computers bring information to the tips of our fingers in an instant. Television provides us with hundreds of channels, catering to almost any viewer. Ipods and satellite radios let us choose from thousands of songs at the flip of a switch. Unfortunately, these devices also provide many distractions that a student did not have ten years ago.
This chapter explains the distractions that we as students face every day, examines their effects, and suggests ways to decrease, if not eliminate distractions and helps improve concentration. One thing I learned from this chapter is that something as simple as an ineffective learning space can seriously decrease your concentration.
This chapter provides excellent tips on ways to improve your concentration by explaining how clutter and lighting in the workspace is important as is a good diet. “Brain food” indeed. I do understand that turning off the television and the telephone will shut out distractions, but I disagree with refraining from listening to music with lyrics. I find that music helps motivate me and helps me to concentrate, however, I am willing to try to listen to classical music instead to find out if I my studying improves.
I have always tried to take breaks periodically during study time; I find it really does help me refocus when I’m tired. This chapter has helped me to look into my study environment and eliminate many of the distractions I have had in the past.
