The American dream consists of a great career, but a college degree is needed to obtain a fraction of the American dream. But is a college education going to be just a dream? Yes, if the cost to attend doesn’t decrease. The cost of postsecondary schooling is on the rise and will continue to rise. Research shows that minority groups are affected the most by the increase in cost for higher education because they depend so heavenly on government aid. Lowering or making a college education more affordable for all students is the stance that should be followed.
In today’s society, a college degree is considered vital to success. But what is attached to success is a tremendous tuition bill. Paying for college is coming close to impossible. According to CollegeBoard.com, tuition and fees at public colleges and universities soared by 14.1 percent from the last academic year to this year. Community colleges increased tuition and fees by 13.8 percent. “Tuitions are going up quite rapidly because these schools are so dependent on state funding,” says college financing consultant Arthur Hauptman. “When state funds dry up, tuition is one of the things they use to make ends meet” (qtd. in Price). With the loss of the budget, many students are faced with taking out higher loans to cover the difference. “The average undergraduate racks up student debts totaling about $18,000” (Cooper), this number is for a student in a public university, but the average loan debt for a student attending a private college has tripled that amount and not to mention a majority of students attending HBCUs cover seventy five percent of their tuition per academic year with loans.
