The Sergeant of Law
This story tells of a man who is arrogant and greedy and will eventually find his death in the things he cherishes the most. His name is Demitri. He is well known throughout the land, and boasts that he is all-knowing. For the past month and one half, he has been on a game show known as Jeopardy where he clearly outplays his adversaries with a quick thumb, quick logic, and the meticulous planning of that like a wolf.
He utilizes a strategy where he answers almost every question and always goes for the true daily double when he has the opportunity. We join him on the day of his eighty-seventh win. Boasting of his greatness, he belts out a loud “YES!” for his success. After the game is through and his winnings are accounted for, he meets with the defeated contestants to have a chat with the game’s host, Alex Trebek. Overconfident as always, Demitri talks with Alex as if it were just another day in the office, all the while virtually ignoring the other contestants that he believes never stood a chance. With his winnings comes wisdom, every day learning more and more.
He is greeted by his wife in the hotel room that is provided by the game show and its’ sponsors. She says “How did you do tonight Demitri?” He replied by saying “I did utterly spectacular as always my dear! Tonight seems like a common occurrence for I have no worthy adversaries that could ever defeat me on this dear earth!” But his over-confidence almost lead to his downfall in the near loss in his eighty-eighth game as Jeopardy champion.
As his 89th game rolled around, Demitri had accumulated over and above what he had once thought was possible. He felt as though he could not be beat, but no human is always correct.
