The crucible is a play full of fallacy and harsh oppression set to make us rethink our morals and the way people take advantage of their surroundings. It deals with controversial issues which could be considered taboos such as betrayal and witchcraft. Throughout the play, there are many factors contributing to the scenarios being played out. Two of which being: grudges and personal rivalries.
The trails in The Crucible, takes place in a deeply religious and superstitious society of the Puritans and most of the characters played suppose that getting rid of “witches” from their community is God’s work. Right here seems to be on open door for any mishaps. I feel like them being so religious is the problem. If they were just more understanding and open to other scenarios maybe they would have seen what was really going on. Conversely, there are plenty of feuds and rivalries in the small town that play no part in religion and many Salem residents abuse the trials and exert out on the grudges, charging innocent people as being witches.   Abigail was the instigator of all the madness and held a grudge against Elizabeth Proctor after Elizabeth fired her after she found out about the affair Abigail was having with her husband, John Proctor. Since Abigail was the ringleader, she easily used the circumstances as an opportunity to get rid of Elizabeth by accusing her of being a witch and sending her to jail. Abigail saw a way to get what she wanted and was willing to do so at any cost. All the while, the new Reverend Parris is basically doing the same thing by making scapegoats of people like Proctor who question his authority.
The whole situation just got out of hand and the assailants took complete advantage of the power they had and no one was able to stop them.
