The Philippines is the second-largest archipelago on the planet, and the third largest English speaking country in the world. The Philippines is located in Southeast Asia, with Manila being its capital city. The Philippine’s is composed of over seven-thousand islands that are located in the western Pacific Ocean. The land area of the Philippines is about the same size as Arizona. Only about seven percent of the islands are larger than one square mile, and only one-third have names. These islands border such countries as Indonesia, Malaysia, Palau and the Republic of China. For hundreds of years the Philippines were a Spanish colony but the United States began control over the islands in 1898, following the Spanish-American War. During World War II, and the United States victory in the South Pacific, the Philippines gained total independence. The Philippines is a developing country that has greatly been influenced by western civilization, yet still remains an Asian culture. The Culture and lifestyle of the Philippines, is unique and in ways and the cultures differ from region to region and Island to Island. The word "Filipino" did not refer to native people until the mid-nineteenth century. There are many concerns with the Philippine people, including health and medical issues. With the torn economy of a country that can not support it’s nurses, which without help from all advance practice nurses could be tragic.

Based on the census conducted by the National Statistics Office, the recent growth rate of the Philippine’s was 0.04 percent higher than the annual growth during that of the nineties.
