The book is very well written, and descriptive, I’d recommend it to anyone that has read Lord of the Rings, or enjoys fantasy novels. The book, while part of trilogy can easily be read on its own, as the author does an amazing job re-introducing the characters.
Sunbright and Candlemas are in the midst of a battle due to a magical experiment on fleas, making them enormous. Sunbright, although a very competent warrior, is lacking in magical knowledge and is currently working under Candlemas so he may become a shaman. Candlemas is taking the barbarian under his wing because he feels he must pay him back for some of the problems he caused him recently.
Shortly after dispatching of the giant fleas, and cleaning themselves up, Sunbright discovers a falling star. He tells Candlemas of the discovery and they investigate immediately, as soon as they begin to dig up the star, they are thrust into the future by a spell. After a short while they discover that the leader of the Neth Empire is now Karsus, and he has teleported them and the star into the future so that he might continue he research.
Sunbright is teleported out of Karsus’ castle, and soon learns that the problems facing the Neth Empire in the past have only multiplied themselves, as multitudes of people are starving and forced to steal to survive. Candlemas learns a while after Sunbright that things are not as he hoped and that Karsus is, while brilliant, insane.
While observing how the lower class steals from the market, Sunbright becomes a part of the group when he kills several guards that attempt to attack him.
