I.1 Definition of long-term health care insurance.
A. Insurance that must be purchased separately from health care to pay for the costs of long-term health care.
B. Long term care can mean many different things but any chronic or disabling condition that requires nursing care or constant supervision can bring on the need for long-term care services.
C. There are a variety of services offered under long term health care insurance. They include institutional or noninstitutional care.
1. Home Health Care
a. Services received in the home.
b. Services include skilled nursing care, speech, physical, or occupational therapy or home health aide services.
2. Home Care (Personal Care)
a. Consists of assistance with personal hygiene, dressing or feeding, nutritional or support functions and health related tasks.
3. Adult Day Care
a. For people living at home.
b. Provides supervision for elderly persons during day while family members are not home.
4. Assisted Living Facilities
a. Provide ongoing care and related services to support those needs resulting from a person’s inability to perform activities of daily living or cognitive impairment.
5. Respite Care
a. Provides family members a vacation from care giving.
b. Can be provided in a variety of settings.
6. Hospice Care
a. Program of care and treatment.
b. Provided either in home or hospice facility.
c. Care for people who are terminally ill and have life expectancy of 6 months or less.
