Americans Support Proposals to eliminate the Electoral College.
The Electoral College was established by the founding fathers as a compromise between Congress and the votes of the people. The American electoral process was established so instead of directly voting for the President and Vice President, Americans vote for their Electoral College representatives, comprised of candidates of the fifty states and the District of Columbia. Electors vote for the candidate of their choice, who then votes for the president and vice president of their choice. The result of this is that voters indirectly vote for their choice of president by voting for their Electoral College representatives. This system which has been in place for over two hundred years has been used to elect the nation’s presidents, making the president and the vice president the only elected federal officials not chosen directly by the popular vote.
There is little question that the American public is in favor of eliminating the Electoral College, and prefer a direct popular vote, which represents the voice of the people for the presidency. In Gallup polls that stretch back over 50 years, over seven hundred proposals have been introduced in Congress to reform or eliminate the Electoral College. Americans have submitted more proposals for Constitutional amendments on changing the Electoral College than on any other subject.
As early as June 1944, the public was polled about the Electoral College system Prior to Roosevelt’s re-election for his fourth term. A question posed by the Gallup Poll asked the public if they thought the electoral voting system should be discontinued, and the nations presidents be elected by the popular vote. Sixty five percent of Americans favored the popular votes; with twenty three percent saying they opposed it, and thirteen percent did not provide an opinion.
