Dependent On Machines

Dependent On Machines

Only thing that is left of the little men is their huge heads and their brains. They even had machines that would think for them. They probably had machines that would do everything for them, even substitutes for their body parts. It is stated, “They stand about, little misshapen men with huge heads.” The author’s implication throughout the story seems that as human beings depend on machines too much; only thing that became a necessary component in their lives became their brains. Whatever that seemed like putting efforts, for example, the job of thinking, were all done by the machines.
The book mentions that the little men in the story were lonely. It is stated, “Their loneliness was beyond hope.” The book explains that as time passed, all forms of life were destroyed by either the machines or the men. Without the existence of life forms on earth, the little men obviously became lonely. The author has created such a future based on what humans do on daily basis. We basically kill or hunt things down, which in result disturbs nature’s part of food chain.
The author has described humans as not being curious. It is stated, “Man had lost their instinct of curiosity.” Without this very important quality that makes us human, these little men in the story have basically lost their humanity. Our ability to be curious about anything enables us to study further in that area of knowledge and therefore we advance towards our better understanding of the universe. It seems that the little men in the story have reached a stage where they feel that they do not feel the need to learn any further. Even if they were curious, they would require a machine that would think for them.
