Diabetes cost the United States $174 Billion dollars in 2007. This includes the cost of medical cost, treatment supplies, disability, time lost from and premature death. It is the sixth largest cause of death in the United States. Diabetes is a wide spread disease that will only worsen if people are not made aware of the cause. In this term paper, we will discuss what is diabetes, the types of diabetes, who it effects, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prevention.
Diabetes is an endocrine system disorder. It affects the rate of metabolism of glucose in the body. The natural process of glucose being broken down by the body is that we eat the food; the food gets broken down, glucose then goes into the bloodstream and enters the cell with the aid of insulin. Insulin comes from the pancreas and is released the bloodstream so that glucose can be used as energy by the cell. However a person who has diabetes does not produce little to no insulin allowing the sugar to stay in the blood stream allowing the cells to starves.
There are three main types of diabetes, Diabetes Type I “Insulin dependent,” Diabetes Type II “Non Insulin dependent,” and gestational diabetes. Type I diabetes was known as juvenile diabetes, but now with the variety of the population getting this form of diabetes, it is not know to be called this anymore. It was once known as juvenile diabetes because it usually occurred at an early age or born with it. A person who has Type I diabetes, their pancreas does not produce insulin therefore must take insulin shots daily for survival. Only 5 to 10 percent of people with diabetes in the United States have Tpe I diabetes.
