"The question is not, Can they reason? nor Can they talk? but, Can they suffer?"

Over the years, I have noticed a particularly inefficient and illogical tendency in human nature. It is the tendency for us to mistake our belief systems for who we are. For example, if you want to discuss the particulars of someone's religious beliefs, they may become deeply offended and feel as if you are questioning their very validity as a human. For some reason, we humans have a predisposition to substituting mass consciousness for personal identity. An area of human existence where this wrecks particular havoc, is in our relationships with our fellow animals (make no mistake, humans are animals in every biological sense of the word). Like religion, politics, and sex, the subject of "animal rights" seems to be especially conducive to fuzzy thinking, intense or violent emotions, and arbitrariness.
