Every month they have to come up with new advertisements for billboards, magazines, the T.V, and the radio. Throughout the year new products must be imagined and put to the test to eventually make it to the shelves of major stores to compete for the popularity of people around the world. The cosmetics companies are always looking for new trends, new styles, and of course new smells to advertise to the rapidly growing world population of 6.4 billion people. Even more new to the cosmetics department is men’s cologne, now with at least 500 different scents on the shelves of many stores. Specifically two companies have taken the popular advertising method of ‘sex sells’, correlated it into two different advertisements and applied this in two different manners to try and sell their products.
Old spice, a company that was established in 1934 has been steadily selling their products over the years. Originally, Old Spice was a company that had created a product line that was target at women; this line was called Early American Old Spice for Women. It wasn’t until 1938 that Old Spice had come out with a product line for men. When the product line came out, Old Spice was popular for the products of shaving soap and aftershave lotion. The trademark of sailing ships is used with the product line, because the founder, William Lightfoot Schultz wanted to keep the theme of old colonial times going. Thus, throughout time the Old Spice product line has been known for their sailing ship trademark towards men everywhere. In 1990 Old Spice had to take a different spin on things and a new line containing Deodorant, Old Spice Fragrances, Skin Care, and Antiperspirant products were purchased by the company Procter & Gamble. More recently Old Spice has come out with a product line called High Endurance which many are familiar with.
