Where Does Love Fit into the Picture?
I believe what both Graham and Coontz are trying to express through their literature is that just recently in the last couple centuries has marrying for love become the norm. Graham in her article “the Future of Love: Kiss Romance Goodbye” goes into great detail describing the main reason for such a union for centuries has been economics. Paired with the chemical bonds such as Dopamine, Nor epinephrine, and PEA love does not stand a chance to outlast these chemicals if not thought through. Lastly she reiterates that people now a days do not fight for their marriage as they once did.
One of Grahams most profound statements in her article was: “we have tirelessly tried to formalize, rationalize, legalize, legitimize, politicize and sanitize rapture.” I find that statement to not only be true but summarizes the actions of us all as a whole. Since the dawn of time we have been pairing up in two's like for Noah's ark with, procreation in mind, or for economic gain, for class structure but never for love. Now in the past few hundred years that has become the goal. Its seems symbiotic that marriage should feed off of love. We seem glamorized love on TV and assume that these fairy tales are the idealistic pairings and that we all should strive for the same.
I believe Graham is trying to open our eyes and make us understand that a marriage based on nothing but love will never work. I completely agree with her, once the romance and the fly by night affair subsides your then entangled in a loveless marriage that is based on nothing. She supports the future in abolishing haste marriages based on pure love by listing the many reasons why they just will not work. A marriage should be based on mutual respect, not chemical lust, by two people that are financially aware of their circumstances.
