Domestic Violence
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the different impacts that effect children which are exposed to Domestic Violence. When referring to Domestic Violence first thing that comes to mind is usually violence by men toward or against women. However it is much more than just that, it could be violence committed by one family or household member against another. It can be a partner, brother, sister, mother, child, spouse, even and ex. The clinical definition is “a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks, as well as economic coercion, that adults or adolescents use against their intimate partners”. Children who watch, hear, try to intervene or even see the scares and bruises afterwards have been exposed to Domestic Violence. This paper is going to focus on the children who are exposed to this Domestic Violence.
I want to start by giving you a little bit of information on my family, when I was growing up as a child. My mother was and still is a very religious person; she raised all her three children with in the Seventh Day Adventist church. My father was completely opposite my mother he was the party guy, he love staying out late coming home drunk and disappearing for days at a time. He was a flower giver. He was around during my early childhood years. He tried isolating my mom from her family, I remember how she refused to be isolated from her family, and so then he restricted his kids from going to my mother’s family’s house. I recall how it was the most important event of the year my cousin sweet 15, my brother and I could not attend, however my mom’s first child and her went, I remembered how I cried all night. Two weeks after we were leaving church a Saturday afternoon and I begged my mother to let me go to my cousin’s house after church and spend the day with them.
