Dream Act
Ever since America was founded it has been built and expanded by immigrants. People from all over the world have migrated to our great nation in order to create a better life for themselves. Years ago, there was a system in place for accepting mass amounts of immigrants at once at Ellis Island. Nowadays though, America is not expanding its physical size the way it once was; as a result, were running out of room. While we still have a system for taking immigrants and allowing them to become citizens eventually, it is a very long and tedious process. Millions of Mexicans have decided that they do not like our strict immigration rules and have migrated by the masses illegally into our country. Our government has been proposing plans to deal with this issue for a long time. The most recent plan, the Dream Act is on the right track. However, it is severely flawed and in its current form will not help curb the illegal immigration problem. The Dream Act could, in fact, make the situation worse.
The Dream Act was proposed as a way to deal with the children of illegal immigrants. The theory was, these children had no say about coming to America, and once here their choices are severely limited by their illegal status. If the Dream Act were to pass, these children could gain an American citizenship after graduating high school and by completing two years of higher education or two years of military service.
