Dream Recall
Dreams are the images, thoughts and feelings experienced while sleeping, particularly strongly associated with rapid eye movement sleep. I’ve learned quite a few things about dreams from past psychology classes and personal life experience. For example, I understand that the contents and biological purposes of dreams are not fully understood, though they have been a topic of speculation and interest throughout recorded history. According to Myers (2007), “dreams are hallucinations of the sleeping mind. They are vivid, emotional, and bizarre” (Module 18, p. 280). The book unfolds the numerous possible explanations as to why we dream. These include to reflect cognitive development, to make sense of neural static, to develop and preserve neural pathways, to file away memories, and to satisfy our own wishes. As one can see, it is obvious that dreaming is a very important process we undergo every time we sleep, and it’s a process that’s almost necessary to our staying alive.
My problem is that for the past couple of years, I’ve been unable to remember my dreams. My situation is that I sleep 7-8 hours a night and am in good health, but I can’t ever seem to remember any dreams. I’ve always had a great interest in trying to understand why it is that I can not recall any dreams. I have so many questions about why this could be. Some people remember part of their dreams. I don't remember ANY. I go to sleep, and then I wake up 8 hours later, feeling fine, but I have no recollection whatsoever of ANY dreams. Does this mean I don’t have dreams? Is this normal or what is going on? Does this happen to anyone else? I remember I did dream as a kid, but I can’t remember what about.
