Drug Abuse
Canadian teens all over the world are experimenting with drugs mostly in their adolescent years. Not thinking about the consequences or negative effects of their actions. Even what may seem simple like tobacco, at a young age can increase the risk of trying other drugs.
The most common gateway drug is marijuana, leading to drugs as serious as narcotics, MDMA, and alcohol dependence and abuse. Most teens don’t know all the causes and effects drug abuse can cause.
Marijuana is called a gateway drug, which this means it can lead to the experimentation of other drugs. Normally teens begin smoking marijuana once in a while at parties and if enjoyed soon after that they will start smoking it after school. Next a teen will be smoking on weekends with their friends and before long, it is used by youth at home, at school, and any other chance they have. A sad and dangerous fact is that many teens do not know what is in their marijuana. Often it is laced with cocaine or contains PCP as an additive. PCP (angel dust, ozone) is white crystalline powder that is made illegally in laboratories.
Teens who have drug problems, again do not often realize it because their judgment is clouded. Cannabis or marijuana affects most people differently depending on how often they use the drug and how much they are using in general.
Soon after smoking marijuana a person may feel more relaxed and talkative which may help with social problems or feelings of anxiety, or, they may feel the total opposite and become dizzy, nervous and upset. They also become less concerned with what they are doing or saying.
This creates a door of escape that a drug like marijuana opens. Soon after teens want to take experimenting to a new level, now feeling experienced and ready to try a more powerful drug.
