Picture this: A mother gets a call from the police late at night. They tell her that her son, who is valedictorian of his graduating class and an upcoming freshman at Harvard University, has just been killed in a car accident because he was under the influence of marijuana. In just one moment a family is torn apart and a brilliant young adult’s life is destroyed. Many people question the legalization of a drug that can do so much damage not only to one’s health and safety but also one’s social standing in society. As a result of the negative effects from this substance, the use of marijuana should remain illegal in the United States.
Perhaps the most obvious reason to keep marijuana illegal is the health risks it has on the human body. Numerous cases have been performed and can prove how dangerous marijuana is to one’s immune, circulatory, neuro, and respiratory systems.. Researchers have found that THC (tetrahydracannabinol) changes the way in which sensory information is acted on by the hippocampus. This is the temporal lobe of the brain's limbic system and is crucial for learning, short-term memory, emotions and motivations. Investigations have shown that THC deteriorates neurons in the information-processing system of the hippocampus. The Minnesota County Attorneys Association proposed an in depth medical journal opposing the use of marijuana. The proposal elaborates on many studies including a study done at Columbia University,
“A study found that a control group smoking a single marijuana cigarette every other day for a year had a white-blood-cell count that was 39 percent lower than normal, thus damaging the immune system and making the user far more susceptible to infection and sickness” (Minnesota County Attorneys Association).
