Ecstasy, also known as MDMA (Methylenedioxcymethamphetamine), is a dangerous drug that should never be taken. This synthetic methamphetamine drug is related to both Amphetamine and Mescaline. “Ecstasy was first synthesized in 1912 by a German company possibly to be used as an appetite suppressant or a weight-loss drug. However, it was never marketed due to the unusual side effects of the drug” (Morrissey 4). Ecstasy is known to produce both stimulant and psychedelic effects that will enable people who take the drug to remain active and lively for longer periods of time without getting fatigued. This drug is usually in pill or capsule form that sometimes has a "brand name" or a logo stamped on it, but it can also be sold as a powder. The price of a dose can range from about $20 to $30. Ecstasy is known as one of the most pernicious and damaging drugs available. It is also the second most popular drug in use.
In relevance to the history of Ecstasy, this drug was created by accident by two German scientists, Mannish and Jacobsohn. These two men worked for Merk in 1912 as an intermediate to a vasoconstrictor known as hydrastinine. The drug was believed to be used as a weight loss drug, but was not heavily marketed. In the beginning the drug was in inactive use doe about 40 years. It was eventually applied in the US Military during drug tests. Ecstasy was believed to be tried as a truth agent but obviously this could not be established. “Ecstasy is classified as an empathagen, and psychiatrists began to use it with their patients to clear their defenses and better relate to them. The most prominent desirable effect of ecstasy is how it breaks down the walls of communication by alleviating feelings of guilt, remorse, and fear” (Ecstasy History 1).
