lagiarism and theft of academic work is rampant in schools, colleges, universities and the workplace. There are many studies that indicate that plagiarism is an immense problem in education institutes, and the amount of plagiarism has increased over the past three decades with studies indicating a 13 percent jump from 2002 (Martin, 2005; Losi, 2006). This is due to an abundance of reasons from familiarity with technologies to improper education of plagiarism by teachers.
What is Plagiarism?
According to S.E. Bramer of Widener University, plagiarism is “To steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own, to use without crediting the source and to commit literary theft” (Bramer, 1995). As plagiarism is an extensive problem there are many ways that teachers, students and parents can combat it and learn or teach proper ways to research and reference, which will help students later in life as two studies found a strong relationship between plagiarism at school/university and in the working world. (Ehrlich, 1998; Martin, 2005). Although plagiarism is a rampant, education institutes officials say they are equipped with the tools to easily catch the offender (Losi, 2006).
There are software programs and websites on the market which aid in the prosecution of plagiarism perpetrators, software such as ‘turnitin.com’.
Plagiarism Prevention Software
Turnitin.com is an internal system consisted of the pro quest database; a massive amount of periodicals, a search of the internet, all previously submitted material and published writers documents and papers (Martin, 2005; Losi, 2006). Teachers and professors can take students assignment papers or class tasks and enter them into the database. The program then instantly recognises the plagiarised parts of the assignment and returns the papers with the plagiarised bits highlighted and plagiarism percentage number (Losi, 2006).
