John Gatto “Against School” along with society share numerous beliefs regarding the educational system. Schools are designed to educate every student with skills and development in order to be successful throughout life. According to Gatto, public schools actually do not educate students as much as they claim to do. Students take education too lightly, hence the reason not enough information is learned. In my perspective educational is the key to success. Without a good education one will not be successful in life. There are some exceptions to people who have succeeded with minimal education but that is rare. The system is designed in a way where students are not able to retain information. Memorization is one of the biggest problems. Students memorize information for a test, do well on the exam and then within two weeks the information is lost. Education must be constructed in a form where students can learn information where it will not be lost. This can be accomplished by creating a fun, safe, social environment. School and education are too textbook-oriented, where students develop routines. Routines are good, but can lead into bad habits. Bad Habits then lead into poor results. Students need to be able to put in work not only in the classroom, but on their own time. In my eyes, education is what someone makes of it. If someone wants to learn, no matter what environment, he or she will achieve.
The objective of school is to educate each student with the proper knowledge to succeed. It is the teacher’s job to enforce this, but students often claim that they are bored and education is useless. Students need to be able to work in an environment that’s fun, interactive and not just sitting at a desk for eight hours. According to Gatto, “School trains children to be employees and consumers, teach your own to be leaders and adventurers”. (158).
