Electoral College
Electoral College is a group of people that elect candidates to particular office positions. Often this group is adjusted to certain criteria to match the general public in some manner, but in general those people are hoped to possess wisdom that would help make a better decision. Electoral College is an institution that was first started in an ancient Germanic law which ruled that the king must have his nobles’ support to lead the country. The Founding Fathers adjusted the same system fit the United States trying to solve the common problems deriving from the history of the country.
In the beginning there were several great issues that had to be solved. First, the new country was composed of thirteen smaller states that were all suspicious of each other and worried of the power of the central government. Also, the population was scattered in a large area with no efficient means of transportation or communication and the people themselves, derived from British political system, believed parties to be, at the least, deceitful and unnecessary. The people that took office positions believed that “The office should seek the man, the man should not seek the office” (William C. Kimberling. The Electoral College p.1). Although the design of the Electoral College had changed and the years of experience had strengthen it, there are still issues that point the institution as imperfect and sometimes inadequate. The fact is that the possibility of electing a minority president remains as, of course, the possibility of the electors voting against their state’s popular vote. Electoral College can also overcome a potential voter turnout and doesn’t always represent the state’s popular vote.
