USING THE INTERNET AND EMAIL AT WORK
I read two articles for my presentation, the first dated September 1999 and the second dated March 2008. Between the two articles I wanted to demonstrate two things, one being how much employee’s use the internet at work and the other how much they use company email for personal use. Below you will find my summary, relationship to management, and if I agree or disagree.
Summary:
In the early 90’s the internet was fairly new to businesses, although their employees had been using the internet at home, employers were just starting to understand it and its effects in the work place. Employers noticed that their employees were using the internet not just as a valuable tool for research, but as a way to surf the web and send email to there co-workers, friends and family. An independent study dated September 1999 by Vault.com surveyed 1,244 employees and 1,438 employers to determine how web surfing and e-mail use effect productivity and quality of life at work. What they found was that it did in fact affect the productivity of the company as well as jeopardized the company’s security and proprietary information. Fast forward to 2008 with new technology, companies can now monitor internet and email usage of each and every employee. Not only can they monitor the usage, but they are also setting up procedures that help stop the non business related use of the internet and email.
How the article relates to management:
Company managers want high productivity out of their employees but when employees are spending time surfing the net and writing personal emails productivity decreases.
