The scenario from yesteryear went something like this: “This is the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite” (Cronkite, n.d., p. 1, ¶ 1).” Today the scenario goes more like this: “Live from the ABC News Center its Good Morning America” (ABC News, 2008). The flat organization model has carried over into small and large business environments to create the direct and effective delivery of products and services. The organization is enabled to have successful training, support, and outside functionality throughout the business team(s).
The first scenario focused on exemplifying who the leader or lead anchorperson was in the old news delivery system. The latter focused on highlighting the team. A good local example would be from a Sacramento, California television station. The broadcast always leads off with, “Welcome to KCRA-3, where the news comes first” (KCRA Channel 3, n.d.). Again the focus was on the team, not an individual. The teams within today’s organizations still have a leader or lead person, however, by eliminating the middle-management position the team members are empowered to provide opinions and divulge a style or talent which could be smothered in the traditions of old.
The Good Morning America (GMA) team has four frontline members, Chris Cuomo, Diane Sawyer, Robin Roberts, and Sam Champion. The members share in delivering various topics based upon the amount training, experience, and subject familiarity possessed at the time. The interesting factor is Cuomo and Sawyer share responsibility as Co-anchors (sort of like Co-CEOs), which eliminates the ‘I am the person in charge factor.’ The shared responsibility leaves the audience to focus on the messages and not the messengers.
