1. Introduction
In today's fiercely competitive business environment there has to be much greater interaction between customers and manufacturers. ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) is a strategic tool, which equips the enterprise with the necessary capabilities to integrate and synchronize isolated functions into streamlined business Processes. It also optimizes the resources available in or- to gain a competitive edge in the turbulent business environment.
ERP systems present an excellent planning and scheduling capability that leads to significant gains in productivity and at the same time a dramatic increase in customer service. Moreover, ERP system innovations present the introduction of relational database management systems (RDBMS) as well as a graphical user interface (GUI), open systems and client/server architectures. ERP systems achieve a radical change in the design field of information systems: management solution designers and vendors direct their planning efforts to a general framework of applicative solutions rather than focusing attention only on the functional characteristics of individual elements. Basically, ERP systems exchange data with a central database that contains all information concerning the enterprise.
