Essay on American Culture
I have never stopped to realize how many cultural groups I, myself, belong to. I thought the only “culture” I had in me was my father’s Greek heritage and perhaps a bit of my mother’s Irish heritage. After taking a closer look what culture is and taking a deeper look at its definition, I realize I belong to one macro-culture, and many micro-cultures. Let me take a step back and explain what I’ve learned.
After our class discussions, reading our text and reading the handout materials, I have come to learn that culture is: A group of people with common interests, background, language, ideas, religion, ethnicities, origins, traditions, same race, rituals, material culture (things with cultural meaning attached), day to day life, food, clothing, interactions, daily living customs, common ties, customs, and celebrations. Culture is extremely important in our lives and it is crucial that we understand our own culture, as well as the cultures of others.
We live in a world today where we need each other’s help and support in order to get through our lives. We need the support of friends, neighbors, and family just in our own personal life and we need the help of other countries on a national level. Because we rely heavily on the support of others it is crucial that we respect each other, eliminate ignorance and tolerance, and discover a common ground we can live comfortably together on. On both personal and national levels we also need to be aware that the decisions we make truly do affect others, and perhaps we should take them into account before we simply do what we want. We need a higher level of understanding of other cultures in order to create a peaceful, harmonious society. You may be wondering how we can learn about other cultures?
