Genetic Modified Food
Genetic modified food has many advantages and disadvantages but the advantages have proven beneficial to life. Genetically mutated food has not only proven beneficial to mankind but also to agricultural industries. Genetic modified food helps in building resistance in plants so they can solve the problem of starvation. Genetic modification is a technique to copy or transfer individual genes to another living organism to alter it up, thereby incorporating or deleting specific characteristics into or from the organism.
The want for genetic food has increased form the past five decades.GM food has helped farmers grow crops which are diseases resistance ,drought tolerant and salinity tolerant .Crops which has high nutrition capacity .Around 12 million farmers whose farms are in the developing countries choose to use GM crops. Farmers coming from 6 different continents that are around 23 countries use GM crops to solve different production challenges. The use of GM crops has reached to 1.7 billion in the past 12 years. The use of Gm food has also solved problems like night blindness by enriching the beta-carotene in rice, this stimulated the production of vitamin A. This rice was made available to the third world for free in order to solve the problem of night blindness which is seen in 500,000 children and causes around 2 million deaths annually.(Dr Traore Ouola). GM food has also made life of crops and environment healthier by increasing the resistance in plants for example it has made the crops more pest resistance, herbicide tolerant, disease resistance, cold torences, drought tolerance and salinity tolerance, pharmaceuticals and phytoremediation. It has also helped the environment because form the time Gm food has been introduced; farmers have decreased the use of pesticides by 289,000 metric tons by 15%.
