Ethics Of College Recruiting
I. Introduction
A. Mark Twain once said, "It is all right to break laws so long as you obey customs."
B. In other words, tradition of accommodating intercollegiate sports as an exception to standard policies and procedures within academe is all right because it "works" and the university allegedly has benefited from this custom.
C. This raises two linked questions:
1. What specifically does a university gain from intercollegiate athletics?
2. What price does it pay for the exceptional practices that surround intercollegiate athletics?
D. These are best seen as largely historical questions to be answered by looking at how intercollegiate sports have operated and interacted with the campus as a whole.
E. In this speech I will discuss how Drugs are involved in these customs of athletics and the fact that it is overlooked in most situations. Also the Academic Fraud that is repeated over and over and the accused are slipping by without penalty. And finally the illegal processes that occur during Recruiting.
F. All of these factors are in the scheme of College Athletics and most of these regulations are bent to uphold the tradition that is only corrupting itself.
II. Drugs and Athletes
A. The use of drugs can take you from a high level of accomplishment only to shoot down you hopes and dreams and can even end in death.
B. I use the Example of Len Bias: (Maryland Star, Drafted by the Boston Celtics, Celebrated a little too much and overdosed on cocaine- 11.1 grams)
C. Coach of Maryland University, James Driesell, the day after the event occurred said, "Well, I would be very, very, surprised if it was drugs because Len was tested by a few NBA teams and I'm pretty certain that there were no drugs."
