Ethics, Religion, Tolerance And Diversity

Honor and Integrity week entailed two lectures on the mosaic of diversity and religion, involving ethics. Two speakers spoke very clearly on these two subjects and tried to influence me and two other people, as their audience. I learned what I had already known, which is to be tolerant of others, and to think more about religion and how it is not just religion, but has ethical aspects we can all use.
Diversity, the new buzzword in universities across the country and is definitely going to be a major issue as we step into the near future. What exactly is diversity? Diversity is a term covering all significant differences between people, not just the obvious ones. These differences include age, education, role, abilities and experience as well as gender, race, ethnicity, language and literacy skills. They entail everything that makes people different one another. The dictionary defines diversity as a "situation that includes representation of multiple groups within a prescribed environment, such as a university or workplace. This refers to difference between cultural groups, although it is used to describe differences within cultural groups".
There is no such thing as race. People should be asked ethnicity, when referring to one's background. Our country has always consisted of people from diverse backgrounds. Coming from a diverse background and belonging to a diverse country, we are of the opinion that diversity is important to the success of an organization. This calls for people from different cultures to work towards a common goal, for which, one needs to learn and accept the cultural differences. The major happenings around the world today are collaboration, technology advances and globalization and the diversity in this country and the value given to it helps us in the process of assimilation.
