I. BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Rationale for Undertaking the Study
Mccan & Berkley Global Support Manila is a shared services firm. The focus on the study will be on one staff extension team – The Asia Pacific Regional Accounting. The team was led by the CFO of Asia Pacific region -Theresa Furlow who is based in Australia. She is supported by John Tizon as Regional Accounting Manager and Eliza Cruz as Financial Analyst who are based in Manila. The team works in a virtual environment where the main source of communication is email and phone calls.
The team is dealing with conflicts relating to Eliza’s behavior. She was suspended of committing major offense of playing software games. She also frequently commits tardiness and oftentimes on sick leaves. Since her suspension, John already tried to be strict on her and has affected her performance because of this. Theresa and John tried to convince her that her suspension has nothing to do with this by providing Eliza the highest merit increase in 2006 and even sent her to Business Objects training in Singapore.
In 2007, Theresa and John hired someone from Hexagon Bank and placed her in a position higher than Eliza. Unfortunately, the new team member left for a better offer from ADB.
In 2008, Eliza wanted to transfer team, she demanded salary increase, flexible hours and laptop but Theresa and John can only give her and second and third demands.
The study focuses on understanding what has motivated Eliza to behave as such. The study also would like to know what should be done in order to prevent Eliza from leaving the team and what should be done in order to resolve team’s conflicts and develop Eliza as contributor to the team.
