Ethics
Kantianism theory is a belief that all people have a sense of moral that is universally good. A true Kantianism will do what is ought to and not what they want to. Kantianism theory also belief that an act that is done through good intentions but resulted in a bad outcome is still ethical because it was done through good intentions. In CURE’s case the ethical choice would be to not cheat the system so the integrity of the confidentiality obligation is kept. According to the first formulation of the categorical imperative, cheating the system by rigging the vote is unethical because if it were to be made into a universal moral law it would create a logical contradiction. For example, if everyone started to rig the votes in their favor then the concept of the voting system would lose its integrity. People wouldn’t bother to even vote because they know that their vote wouldn’t really matter because the system was rigged. According to the second formulation of the categorical imperative, people should not treat other people as only a means to an end. Looking at CURE’s confidential information would violate the second formulation because the act would infringe on the trust of the board members and break the confidentiality contract. Also this act would not only treat the board members as means to an end but also violate the trust of other organizations that are competing for CURE’s funding. A counter argument would be that the Malaria vaccine has the potential to help many children so the positive outweighs the negative.
