Ethnic Groups And Discrimination
I am an African American and I live in the United States. This particular group of
people faced many issues over the past years. They have battled many things like
segregation, glass ceiling, glass walls, and many other discriminating factors. In this
research paper I am going to discuss some of those things with you from my point of
view of firsthand knowledge as well as some simple research about the history of this
group.
African Americans were not the natives of this country (America). They were
brought over from different countries in Africa. Upon being brought to this country they
were enslaved and sold to other people like property, mainly Europeans that had settled
here and wanted to take over the country politically. This was not enough for the
Europeans they wanted more out of the African Americans, so they used them for labor
work and things of that nature.
This particular group faced prejudice in the form of naming them different names
such as nigger. This term is a derogatory term used by European Americans to describe
anger or hate towards an African American. This word is still used today in societies all
around the globe. This is not something I believe or have an opinionated view against, it
is a fact.
The African Americans also faced segregation as time went on, and they became
freed from slavery. For example an article from the school library discusses how
African American children were not allowed to enter a school because of their race
(American school board journal, 2007).
