problem facing the hotel industry in China
On the 11 December 2001 China became a full member of the Word Trade Organisation (WTO), as well as the granting of the Olympic Games 2008 in Beijing, and the improved relations with Europe, tourism is playing a more and more important role for this country, and the Chinese government expects a major boost in the hospitality sector over the next 10 years. China has become a leading tourist destination since 1978( Wen,1998).
With 32 million tourists each year and an annual increase in international visitor of 7.9 per cent, companies associated with the Chinese hotel industry stand to profit from this trend, says Dong, Droege and Johson (2002). According to a forecasted by the World Tourism Organization, “China aims to attract 210 million overseas visitors annually by 2020, more than double the current figure, by the same year, China will become the world's No. 1 tourism destination in terms of the number of inbound travellers, and the fourth-largest country for outbound tourists.” China’s hotel industry has been fully opened, and almost all the top international hotel groups are now doing business in the country, Xinhua news agency reported.
However, as Li (1995) points out, while an increasing number of hotel investors are attracted by China’s thriving economy and its fast-growing tourism industry, there are also experience various frustrations, some of which are linked to human resources management issues. The purpose of this essay is analyse those human resource issues facing the hotel industry in China, and evaluate the solutions that can solve out these problems.
