Good nutrition is the basis for a healthy life. Attaining a sufficient amount of nutrition for the body can be a complex process. The human body needs nutrients from six categories to maintain a healthy life. These categories include carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, minerals, and water. Carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are used as the body's central source for fuel.
Carbohydrates are a necessity to living a healthy life. Complex carbohydrates are very useful to the body where as simple carbohydrates are not as important to the body's nutritional needs. Complex carbohydrates need to be eaten daily.
Proteins regulate body processes. Fat is also an important part of a healthy diet. Fats are important to the foods we eat as well as to our bodies. Fats are important to our bodies because they are the bodies chief form of stored energy, they provide most of the energy to fuel muscular work, and they serve as an emergency fuel supply in times of illness and diminished food intake. Fat pads inside body cavity protect internal organs form shock; fat layers under the skin insulate against temperature extremes.
Vitamins and minerals are important to a healthy diet. Vitamins and minerals are a central nutrient to a healthy diet. Minerals such as calcium, protein, magnesium, sodium, iron and zinc are the most necessary minerals for the human body. Calcium is the main mineral in bones and teeth, it acts in nerve functioning, and immune defense. Magnesium builds proteins, maintains normal muscular contractions.
Water is the most indispensable nutrient. Water plays many vital roles in the body's functions, it carries nutrients and waste products throughout the body, acts as a lubricant and cushion around joints, serves as shock absorber inside the eyes, spinal cord, aids in maintaining the body's temperature.
