Fathers Can Make a Difference
“Music makes the world go round”. I know everyone has heard this phrase one day or another and this phrase is one hundred percent true. Music is everywhere. You can find music playing in the background in movies, grocery stores, malls, funerals, weddings, etc.   Music can be used to describe various events that happen in our everyday lives. It can also be used to commemorate special events from our past. Have you ever been in a store and a song comes on in the background and it brings back a memory you had as a child? Situations like this happen every day to millions of people because of the impact music has on us. Music is a powerful tool that can be used for good or bad. A lot of songs have subliminal messages but many of them just come straight out with what they are trying to say. Some of the messages can be basic like about love, money, power or sex. The message my song brings is the importance of a father in a home and how that can affect a child. The song I chose to analyze is by a gospel artist named Kirk Franklin. Kirk Franklin is not your typical gospel artist. He mixes an eclectic of genres such as R&B, hip-hop, and soul all under one broader genre, gospel. Kirk Franklin is very popular in the gospel community. He is known for being different with his creativity in the gospel music industry. He was the first to blend hip hop with gospel and has henceforth been very successful. The specific song that I am analyzing is off his latest album entitled “The Fight of My Life” that was released in December of 2007. The title of the song is “A Whole Nation”.
“A Whole Nation” overall theme is about fathers not being around to raise their children. It has an upbeat, hip-hop like tempo that uses horns, a keyboard and drums to draw out an effect.
