"Dead Man Walking"
Matthew Poncelet played by Sean Penn is one of the lead characters in the film. He is a convicted prisoner who was charged of murder and rape. In the first part of the film, it was shown that he had written to a nun to ask for help concerning his case. Also, he was shown as someone who was trying to fight for his innocence and was denying all the charges against him. He is claiming that he was just a mere spectator.
It was mentioned above, that he asked a nun for help and that nun was Sr. ______ Prejean. She is a nun who is serving at a community of black people. When Matthew sent her a letter she accepted his request for help and decided to help him despite of what his family and friends said. All throughout the case and all the appeals, she stood by him and became Matthew's friend as well as his spiritual adviser.
One of the victims was Hope Percy, a young female student who was already getting ready for college. Hope was with her boyfriend at the time of the incident. Hope's parents, Mr. & Mrs. Percy, were very sad and at the same time angry about the incident. Mr. Percy was given some focus in the film. It portrayed him as a parent who was full of anger and sorrow in his heart. He was very furious towards Matthew. He wanted revenge, he was all for the option of lethal injection for Matthew. He even said that he could have just grabbed the gun of the policeman and shoot him dead.
The boyfriend of Hope Percy was also killed in the incident. He was _______ Delacroix. His parents, Mr. & Mrs. Delacroix were also for the execution of Matthew. In the film, it was shown that said that Mr. & Mrs. Delacroix were having a divorce. This is because, Mrs. Delacroix wanted to leave the past behind and move on with her life and with Mr. Delacroix by her side, she could not simply do it.
