1. As a manager, under what sort of circumstance might you apply each of the Theories of Motivation discussed in Chapter 8? Which would be easiest to use? Which would be the hardest?
Classical Theory: (Employees are motivated solely by money). In a theoretical sense this method of motivation would be simple to implement; simply pay the employee more. However, it may well be questionable whether this method alone would really produce the desired results of higher productivity and profits. Ideally, this method would seem most effective when the individual employee to be motivated places a high value on the amount of money received, and who able to make the necessary correlation between his actual performance and his compensation.
Behavior Theory: (Hawthorne effect productivity increases as the employee's feeling of recognition by the employer increases). Ideally, this method would be one of the less painful methods to foster employee motivation; simply requiring and/or encouraging managers to pay attention to their employees. Indeed, this method by well be more palatable to employers since it achieves the desired results without having to increase costs, (e.g. wages). Moreover, utilizing this method of Motivation Theory would be appropriate in almost all situations where managers have direct access to employees.
Contemporary Motivational Theory: (theories related to Human Resource concerns and how employers treat employees).
