Functions of Management

      When the word management is used, business is immediately associated with

Management. Management is bringing together people to accomplish a goal or project

And it encompasses four major functions. Planning is the first function of management

and the initial stage of any business. The thoughts or idea on which a business is founded

begin here.   The first function of management happens to be the beginning of the

business plan.   Organizing is the second function of management. In business organizing

are the systematic approach of procedures and the building of resources to achieve a goal.  

The ability to affect people to accomplish the goal is known as the third function,

Leading. The fourth function of management is controlling.   Controlling is measured

performance and corrective actions. They are the fundamentals of controlling. The sound

approach to management lies within these four functions and they are “as relevant as

ever.” (Bateman & Snell, 2004, p. 19).

        The four functions have been around since 1100 B.C. when they where practiced by

The Chinese but times have changed and business has changed.   The world has gone

Global and technological advances forced management to rethink how business was

done.   The four functions of management are still at the forefront of business but have

now taken on new meaning. Planning is more than an idea in today’s world. According to

Bateman and Snell (2008), “Historically, planning described a top-down approach.”

A top executive would come up with a business plan and delegate the work and

responsibilities to others.   The function of planning today involves value and value is

measured monetarily as market worth.   It involves goods and services as well as task and
