Four Functions of Management
Management in any organization can be tricky, especially when dealing with an organization that is as diverse as the Army and is spread across many borders. The economy is not always stable for very long. Different variables affect today’s economy. Terrorists’ attacks, dot-com busts, and election years keep the economy rapidly changing. The economy also affects how people manage the businesses that depend so much on what is going on in today’s world.
Communication technologies are changing the ways that people do business. In the Army we have streamlined the personnel actions and official records. Now the amount of paper being used to maintain these records has greatly decreased. This serves two purposes; first it decreases the chance that an important document will get lost and secondly, it makes it easier to go from place to place without having to worry about taking tremendous amounts of documents that you can now pull up at the touch of a mouse. Universities have also profited from the communications age. Almost every University or College has a web page and offer some degree programs taken strictly online. Since enrolling in the University of Phoenix I have not stepped foot on a campus or in a classroom.
One of the most important forces for change in management is the growing need for good, new ideas. Today, managers must create a work environment that attracts good people, makes them want to stay, and inspires creative ideas from everyone. The ultimate goal is to turn the brainpower of their people into profitable products. (Bateman-Snell, 2003)
Management is the process of acquiring, assigning priorities to allocating and using resources (people, money, material, facilities, information, time, etc) in an effective and efficient manner to accomplish organizational goals.
