Functions of Management
What is management? Management is the act of working with employees to ensure that any goals for a business are accomplished. A small business or department may have only one manager to oversee employees. A large organization may have several managers at different levels. An organization can not run successfully without good managers. There are four functions of management that successful managers use to accomplish goals of the organization.
The four functions of management are: planning, organizing, leading and controlling. This paper will clarify those functions.
Planning
“Simply put, planning is selecting priorities and results (goals, objectives, etc.) and how those results will achieved” (Free Management Library, 2008). Planning includes knowing what resources are available, what is the budget required and most importantly, what are our goals. External or even internal factors may make a change in plans necessary from day to day. Successful planning will allow for any changes that may be needed.
The Forest Service is a federal government organization with a multitude of employees, some upper management, some mid-level and some frontline managers. Upper management is where the bigger plans and goals are established. Many of the goals are mandated by law and these laws are the domain of the Department of Agriculture. The Forest Service mission is “caring for the land and serving people” (US Forest Service, 2008). Caring for the land means protecting national forests.
