Book Review - The Geek Gap: Why Business and Technology Professionals Don’t Understand Each Other and Why They Need Each Other to Survive

About the Authors
Bill Pfleging and Minda Zetlin authors of the Geek Gap are a great partnership for the topic of this book. Bill the more tech savvy of the two is currently a web and computer consultant. He has worked for companies such as IBM, Tripod.com and Lycos Network. His most recent company of choice was Lycos Network where he was the Director of Internet Community. Minda on the other hand provides the business expertise offering more than twenty years of experience writing about management, business, and workplace issues. Minda’s most recent body of work is Telecommuting for Dummies. The two of them noticed that information technology world and the business world had a huge disconnect and failed to understand each other on a regular basis. This caused them to team up and bring both worlds together based on their experiences and bridge the gap which they have coined as “The Geek Gap”.
Book Selection
I chose The Geek Gap as my Book Review because Bill and Minda effectively blend the two points of discussion for the Management Information Systems course offered at JFK which are business and technology. This is most relevant to the challenges we face in the 21st century and beyond. The minds of technology and business professionals function differently and it is up to today’s leaders to figure out how to best combine these talents and make them work for the greater good of society. It is clear that without business professionals technological advances would not advance very far and the same goes for technology professionals without their expertise we would not have the innovative products that we have today. There is an exponential need for business and technology professionals to understand each other as we move forward so that as a people we continue to progress.
