Thinking about getting a tattoo, and do not know where to start; you are unfamiliar with the process, you cannot decide on what to get, who is going to do it for you, and where you are going to put it. These are all very legitimate questions and you are not the only one in this position. Unless you take the effort to educate yourself then you may end up with the all the wrong answers.
Most people do not realize the first step in getting a tattoo actually starts with you; your anticipation. Sometimes people think long and hard about how they’re going to go about it. For some, it is spurt of the moment. They drive by a studio; it sparks the whole idea, the next thing you know you have a tattoo. Personally, I think you should take the time to think about what you want, where you are going to put, and who you are going to get to do it for you. A tattoo will last a life time, you do not want to realize in a couple of years later that your tattoo has no meaning and you need to get it covered up, or removed. Unfortunately, it is not like going to buy a new pair of jeans, you do not get to try a tattoo on first.
So the anticipation is covered, next comes the homework. Research as much as you can about the artists in your area. When you see someone with a tattoo, ask them where they got it, how old it is, and if they had any complications. You may even want to try calling Health Canada to see what they regulations are in your area for tattooing. Then you want to make visits to the studios, speak to the artists personally. Ask questions about their sterilization procedures, and take the time to check out their designs and portfolios. Look around and make sure they have an autoclave sterilizer on-site.
