Child Poverty in Africa

The continent of Africa includes some of the most devastating developing countries in the world. Child poverty is significantly increasing in Africa and should be resolved immediately. Children in poverty lack the basic needs required for healthy physical, mental, emotional and spiritual development. Numerous factors contribute to the growing number of children in Africa in poverty. Key factors include overpopulation, environmental degradation and inadequate education. As the modern developed society drives towards a better future, they close their eyes to the problems surrounding them.

Overpopulation
Overpopulation is a key aspect for the increasing amount of children living in child poverty in Africa. As the population continues to grow in Africa with limited amount of resources, poverty will be on the rise. “Excessively high population densities put stress on available resources” (UNICEF, 2004). With the rising struggles in Africa, an individual would believe that the population would be stable. However, the population in Africa is on the rise. Families in Africa believe having more children will bring them support and wealth in the future. Yet, families arenot realizing they are contributing to the cycle of poverty. Nearly, one third of children in Sub-Saharan Africa are underweight (UNICEF, 2004). This eye opener value shows the significant contribution overpopulation has to child poverty. As the population continues to grow, it will only contribute to the growing number of children in poverty.

Environmental degradation
