God and Puritan Life in Anne Bradstreet's Poetry
Although the life of Puritans in the Massachusetts Bay Colony was full of
hardship, and death was an everyday fact of life, their belief in God helped them to
understand and endeavor to survive the ordeal of everyday life. Anne Bradstreet is a
superb example of the puritanical viewpoint, and her poetry gives us a unique insight into
their philosophy. In the puritanical conception of the world was dependent on God, and
they believed very firmly that every event was cause directly by God, and that it was the
role of human beings to suffer in life, so that they could gain a greater reward in Heaven.
This belief was what gave them the strength to continue, and may be the reason the
Massachusetts Bay Colony was so successful.
