I do however have to state that I disagree with having the NCSBN be the governing body of nursing.   There does need to be a consensus on who is responsible for regulation of advanced practice.   Right now with so many specialties including nurse anesthetists (CRNA), nurse midwives (CNM), clinical nurse specialists (CNS), and nurse practitioners (NPs).   This is evidenced by over 23 different organizations represented on the Vision of APRN workgroup (Hudspeth, 2007).   It is also confusing on who is regulating, certifying and licensing all the different entities of nursing.   With nurse midwifery right now the individual state boards of nursing regulate and license nurse midwives.   However, nurse midwives take their competency exams from a different regulation board, the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).   “It is essential for Advanced Practice Nurses to have substantial and continuing influence within the boards of nursing to provide clarity and in-depth understanding of roles, practice, education, and certification in advanced practice nursing” (ANA, 2006).   In regards to practice guidelines accountability for defining the scope of nursing practice rests with the vocation, as does self regulation of its members; nurses have been at the forefront of nursing practice to define their scope and principles through practice, rather than guidelines set by the NCSBN whom would have a hard time regulating all aspects of nursing (ANA, 2006).   According to Beth Partin, the American Nurses Association, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, American Association of Colleges of Nursing, Tri-Council for Nursing, the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties, and the American Nurses are opposed to the NCSBN vision due to lack of unity (2007).   I do believe that there needs to be a clear guideline across all states as to whom should govern nursing and I do believe that individual boards of nursing are set up to...
