Greatest Achievment
The sun had nearly disappeared underneath the horizon. It would have been lighter if the sky hadn’t been engulfed in dreary rain clouds. Tiny rain droplets drizzled onto the stone mountain, which was in reality a mound of man-made granite. An open, wet lawn lay at the foot of one side of this mound, where a show of lights was to take place for the enjoyment of about five families who bothered to watch in the rain. Within one of the families, I lay snuggled inside a picnic blanket with a boy I had met a mere, say, nine hours ago. We had met under the pouring rain—never had I been in such a massive downpour. He lent me his shirt as an umbrella; sadly, the shirt was useless against this monstrosity. In just moments my nicely flat-ironed hair had evolved into something out of a horror film. A rat’s nest. A lion’s mane. I looked like I was straight from the 80’s with a touch of death from my smudged ebony eyeliner. Yet he still somehow found me attractive. In a gazebo full of picnic tables is where we had our first hug.
And now, already, I’m snuggling with this boy. A young boy, in fact. A year and a half younger. Never had I thought this would happen.
Although, he was cute.
Focused on how close we were—sides touching sides—I didn’t think much about his overused line to win a kiss.
“My lips hurt.”
My mind had been so tightly wound around burning facts—the fact that he was thirteen and I was fifteen, and that we were so close, yet so far—that I had only considered this a joke and rolled my eyes to it.
Again, he said this line. Without thinking, as if my body moved on its own, I turned my head, indicating that I wanted to ‘make them better.’ He turned his head towards me in reaction to my movement. My mind raced with blank thoughts as our lips collided to make our very first kiss. My heart pounding, I kept thinking about where this kiss would lead.

“Taylor, will you go out with me?”
